Kirby Ng IGCSE and IB Economics Tutor in Singapore

Kirby Ng fell in love with Economics as a teenager, thanks to a teacher who made the subject click and showed him it could explain the world around him, from Singapore's place in global trade to the prices of cars and HDBs in Singapore. He went on to study it at university, graduating in Economics from the National University of Singapore, and has now taught it full-time for over four years. Today he hopes to do the same for his students, and he pushes himself as hard as he pushes them.

As a student, Kirby enjoyed studying for its own sake and liked staying a step ahead, and he found that the process of learning mattered more than the grade itself. That philosophy still shapes how he teaches and lives his life. An avid baseball fan, Kirby hopes to become like his idol, Ichiro Suzuki, who built a career on discipline and mastering the basics rather than flashy performative acts. How you do one thing is how you do everything. In lessons, that means structure rather than slogans.

Kirby's teaching philosophy comes down to seven commitments:

1. I do, we do, you do. Every essay is modelled in full by Kirby first, built together as a class, and only then written independently.
2. Every step is intentional. IGCSE is the foundation for IB, so every keyword, chapter and skill is taught with the next stage in mind. Students arrive in Grade 11 already fluent in the analysis and evaluation IB demands.
3. Fundamentals, every time. Command words, chains of analysis and diagrams are practised until they are automatic, not dropped once "covered".
4. Push, then push a little further. Students are held to their ceiling, not their comfort zone, with honest feedback on exactly what is holding a grade back.
5. A two-way partnership. Tutor and student work toward the exam as one journey, and students can reach him outside lessons whenever they are stuck.
6. Keep levelling up. Weekly preparation keeps him current with how each international school teaches the syllabus, so lessons line up with what students see in class.
7. Economics beyond the exam. Theory is anchored in real cases, starting with Singapore's, so students leave able to read the news and understand the world, not just answer the question in front of them.
