He previously taught Business and Economics full-time to JC and IB students, and now teaches Economics and Business at KS Academia Prep, including IGCSE and IB Business.

IB Business Management (this page) is a Diploma Programme subject at SL/HL with an Internal Assessment, typically taken in Grades 11–12. If your child is in Grades 9–10 on the Cambridge track, they're likely after IGCSE Business Studies (0450) instead, a single-tier, fully exam-based subject with no coursework.

Both levels study the same five units and the same business management toolkit. The difference is depth, not different content.
Most students who struggle with IB Business Management can talk through a case study perfectly well out loud. That's exactly why the grade feels unfair.
The exam rewards understanding delivered in a specific shape, applying the right tool to the actual pre-released statement or unseen case, not a generic version of the theory. Paper 1's case-study application, the business research project (Internal Assessment), and, for students writing one, the Extended Essay are where most marks are quietly lost.
That's the standard this programme is built around: small classes, and practice returned marked against the real IB criteria, not "good, keep going," but the specific line that cost the mark.
Five questions worth asking any centre, including us, before you commit.
Many centres market a founder and staff classes with junior teachers.
"We give feedback" can mean a tick and a comment.
"Small groups" is not an answer.
Centres built for A-Level can leave IB students taught a mark scheme they'll never sit.
A centre that only drills past papers leaves the most recoverable marks on the table.
Five units for every student, studied to different depths at SL and HL, plus a business management toolkit threaded through all of them. Application to the case in front of you matters more than memorised definitions.
HL doesn't add a separate topic, it goes deeper inside the same five units, with named HL-only sub-topics in each, and carries roughly 240 recommended teaching hours against SL's 150.
Four concepts run through every unit: creativity, change, ethics and sustainability. They're not background reading, the Internal Assessment and higher-mark exam questions expect you to explore business decisions through this lens.

The assessment table tells you what you're sitting. This is how each paper actually rewards different things.
One common task for both SL and HL: a business research project on a real organisation, worth 30% at SL and 20% at HL. It's the most recoverable part of the grade, completed with time and feedback available, unlike the exam papers.
Students select a real, current business issue or decision facing a single named organisation, not a hypothetical one, and investigate it using one of four key concepts as a conceptual lens: change, creativity, ethics or sustainability. The project draws on primary and/or secondary research, typically anchored by three to five supporting documents generally no more than three years old, and applies the relevant business management tools and theories from the syllabus to reach a supported recommendation. It's marked by the school and externally moderated by the IB.
The most avoidable marks are lost early: a vague or hypothetical research question, a business issue that doesn't actually map onto syllabus tools, or a conceptual lens picked for convenience rather than genuine fit. We coach the IA stage by stage, organisation and question, source selection, tool application, and the final write-up, with feedback before it's submitted.
Ask about IA coachingBusiness Management is a recognised Extended Essay subject, a good fit for a student who wants their independent-research component to sit inside the subject they're strongest in.
Like every EE, a Business Management essay is a 4,000-word independent investigation (excluding the bibliography and abstract), built around an original, focused research question, not one of the six syllabus units directly, but a real issue facing a real organisation, investigated using the same business management tools and theories taught in the course. It's assessed against the IB's general Extended Essay criteria, the same five criteria every subject is marked against, rather than a Business-specific rubric. Along the way, students complete three mandatory reflection sessions with their supervisor and a concluding interview, the viva voce.
A workable Business Management EE question usually names a specific company or organisation and a specific decision or outcome to investigate, for example, the kind of question that asks to what extent a named company's pricing, marketing or expansion strategy affected a measurable outcome over a defined period. Vague or purely descriptive questions ("What is Company X's marketing strategy?") don't give enough to analyse and evaluate, and tend to score poorly regardless of how well-written the essay is.
We coach the EE the same way we coach the IA: helping choose a genuinely researchable question early, matching it to sources a student can actually access, and returning drafts marked against the real EE criteria before each supervision session, not after the final draft is due.

Business vocabulary is easier to reason through in the language it clicks in first. We teach the concept in the language that lands, then build the English answer that earns the marks.

HL goes deeper into each unit with named HL-only sub-topics (like corporate culture, budgets, and crisis management), recommends 240 teaching hours against SL's 150, and adds a third paper, Paper 3, on a social enterprise.
