The Course

What is AP Economics?

AP Economics is two separate College Board courses: AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics. Each is equivalent to a one-semester introductory university economics course, each has its own exam every May, and students may take either one or both. Both are typically taken in Grades 11 and 12.

Weighing it against the IB Diploma? Read our guide: AP vs IB Economics in Singapore.

AP Microeconomics

Individual markets and decision-making

How consumers, firms and markets behave

Microeconomics studies choices at the level of the individual actor: how prices form in a single market, how firms decide output and pricing under different market structures, and when government intervention improves or distorts outcomes.

Think: why a bubble-tea chain prices differently from a utility company, and what a tax does to one market.

AP Macroeconomics

The economy as a whole

Growth, inflation, unemployment and policy

Macroeconomics studies the aggregate economy: national income, the business cycle, the banking system, and how fiscal and monetary policy are used to stabilise output and prices in the short and long run.

Think: why a central bank raises interest rates, and what that does to output, employment and the exchange rate.

The Exams

Understanding is the easy part. Let's get you the marks.

Both AP Economics exams run 2 hours 10 minutes with the same structure: a 60-question multiple-choice section worth two thirds of the score, and a three-question free-response section worth one third. They are hybrid digital exams: multiple choice is completed in the College Board's Bluebook app, while free-response answers are handwritten in an exam booklet. That combination punishes students who understand concepts but have never trained the exam itself.

Section I: Multiple Choice

60Questions
70Minutes
66.7%Of Score
  • Concept recognition at speed, just over a minute per question
  • Graph interpretation: reading shifts, equilibria and areas accurately
  • Calculations: elasticity, surplus, multipliers, reserve arithmetic
  • Economic reasoning chains, not memorised definitions
  • Distractor elimination: AP options are built from common errors
  • Pacing discipline: flag, move on, return

Section II: Free Response

3Questions
60Minutes
33.3%Of Score
  • One long question (50% of the section) and two short questions (25% each)
  • Accurately drawn, fully labelled graphs: axes, curves, equilibria, shifts
  • Show-your-work calculations that earn points under time pressure
  • Application of models to unfamiliar scenarios
  • The "explain" standard: a claim plus the reasoning behind it
  • Answering exactly what each part asks, no more and no less

METHOD How we train the MCQ section

Full 60-question sets under the 70-minute condition, then distractor analysis: understanding why each wrong option was written is what stops it working on you.

  • Unit-weighted practice. More repetitions where the College Board puts the marks.
  • Timed from day one. Accuracy without pace does not survive Section I.

METHOD How we train the FRQ section

Long and short FRQs decomposed part by part against AP scoring guidelines: what each command asks, what earns the point, and how much to write. We apply the structured-response discipline of the KS Academia Prep Economics Essay Framework, adapted to AP's point-by-point format.

  • Graphing to AP standard. Drawn by hand, repeatedly, against the standards graders actually apply.
  • Marked like the real thing. Every submitted answer is marked, with the error pattern fed into the next lesson.

AP Exams are administered worldwide each May and scored on the 1 to 5 scale. The structure above reflects the current College Board exam format; confirm session details with your school's AP coordinator.

Who We Help

Who is AP Economics tuition for?

Grade 11 and 12 students at Singapore's international schools on American or AP pathways, and students sitting AP exams alongside another curriculum.

AP Microeconomics students

Taking Micro this year and want market-structure graphs, surplus analysis and calculations mastered early.

AP Macroeconomics students

Working through AD-AS, the money market and policy chains, and need the model mechanics to click.

Students taking both courses

Managing Micro and Macro in the same year, or back to back, and need the overlap taught once, properly.

Strong on concepts, weak on AP questions

Understands the textbook but loses marks to distractors, mislabelled graphs or FRQ parts answered halfway.

Students needing exam technique

Wants timed MCQ strategy, FRQ structure and the graphing precision AP scoring guidelines reward.

May exam candidates

Counting down to the May session and need a structured revision and past-question programme, not more notes. Exam-season intensives run within our holiday programmes.

About AP Economics

What is AP Economics?

AP Economics refers to two Advanced Placement courses run by the College Board: AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics. Each is equivalent to a one-semester introductory university economics course, and each has its own exam every May, scored from 1 to 5. Many universities grant credit or advanced standing for strong AP scores, with policies varying by institution.

What is the difference between AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics?

AP Microeconomics studies individual markets: supply and demand, elasticity, costs and production, market structures, factor markets, and market failure with government intervention. AP Macroeconomics studies the economy as a whole: GDP and economic indicators, the AD-AS model, the financial sector and monetary policy, stabilisation policy, and the open economy. They are separate courses with separate exams.

What does AP Microeconomics cover?

The College Board organises AP Microeconomics into six units: Basic Economic Concepts (12-15% of the exam), Supply and Demand (20-25%), Production, Cost and the Perfect Competition Model (22-25%), Imperfect Competition (15-22%), Factor Markets (10-13%), and Market Failure and the Role of Government (8-13%). Units 2 and 3 alone account for roughly half the exam, and our teaching time is weighted accordingly. Every unit is examined through multiple-choice and free-response questions that demand precise graphs and calculations, not just definitions.

What does AP Macroeconomics cover?

AP Macroeconomics is also six units: Basic Economic Concepts (5-10%), Economic Indicators and the Business Cycle (12-17%), National Income and Price Determination (17-27%), Financial Sector (18-23%), Long-Run Consequences of Stabilization Policies (20-30%, the single highest-weighted unit), and Open Economy: International Trade and Finance (10-13%). The centre of gravity is the AD-AS model and stabilisation policy: Units 3 to 5 carry the majority of the marks, and every one of them is graph-driven. Weightings are the College Board's published multiple-choice weightings in the current Course and Exam Descriptions.

Can students take both AP Economics subjects?

Yes. Micro and Macro are independent courses with exams on different days in the May window, so many students sit both, either in the same year or across two years. The Unit 1 foundations overlap substantially, which is an efficiency we build into tuition for students taking both.

How does AP Economics differ from IB Economics?

Content overlaps heavily, but assessment design differs sharply. IB Economics is a two-year course assessed through essays, data response and, at HL, a quantitative paper, with an Internal Assessment component. AP Economics is typically one school year per course, assessed two thirds by multiple choice and one third by structured free-response questions, with heavier weight on precise graphing and calculation and no coursework. For the full comparison, read our guide: AP vs IB Economics in Singapore.

How does AP Economics differ from IGCSE Economics?

IGCSE Economics is a foundation course usually taken in Grades 9 and 10, building core concepts, data handling and structured writing. AP Economics is college-level: faster paced, more model- and calculation-intensive, and assessed in the MCQ plus FRQ format. A student strong at IGCSE Economics has a genuine head start on AP, but the depth and exam style are a clear step up.

Which Singapore schools follow the AP pathway?

Singapore American School runs one of Singapore's largest Advanced Placement programmes within its American curriculum, Stamford American International School lists AP courses including AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics in its published course materials, and the Singapore School of Science and Technology includes both within its American High School Diploma programme. Availability varies by year and cohort, so check your school's current course catalogue.

Lessons & approach

How does KS Academia Prep prepare students for the AP Economics exams?

Through a six-stage progression for every topic: concept, model, graph, application, calculation, exam response. That is followed by timed multiple-choice training, part-by-part free-response technique built on the KS Academia Prep Economics Essay Framework, error analysis of every marked paper, and a unit-weighted revision programme into the May exams. We teach to the current College Board course frameworks, and we do not promise grades or scores.

Who teaches AP Economics at KS Academia Prep?

AP Economics is taught by our Economics team: Kirby Ng, Lead IGCSE Economics Tutor and an NUS Economics graduate who also teaches IB Economics; Karen Chen, an NUS Business School graduate with more than eight years of tutoring experience; and Kevin, an NUS Business School undergraduate who teaches in English and Korean.

Do you teach AP Economics in Korean and Mandarin as well as English?

Yes. All lessons and materials are in English, and concepts can additionally be explained in Mandarin with Kirby or in Korean with Kevin. Exam answers are always trained in the English the AP papers require.

What size are the classes?

Like every Economics class at KS Academia Prep, AP Economics classes are capped at ten students. One-to-one lessons are also available, on-site at Far East Shopping Centre or online.
