Jason Low didn't set out to become one of Singapore's best IB, A-Level, and IGCSE Economics specialists - he simply never stopped teaching and improving his craft, because it's what he's good at and, frankly, what he enjoys. 14+ years later, he's still at it full-time, quietly building a reputation that tends to speak for itself. His students will tell you he's direct, funny, and genuinely invested in whether they get that grade. In the recent May 2025 IB Economics examinations, every single one of his students - Higher Level and Standard Level alike - walked away with either a 6 or a 7, with the majority (about 77%) achieving the maximum grade of 7. That kind of outcome is not accidental.

Jason holds an Honours degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the National University of Singapore and brings that academic rigour into every lesson - alongside a comprehensive suite of resources compiled over years of teaching that students who join his small-group classes gain access to: summary notes, model essay outlines, past-year papers and marking schemes, curated worksheets, etc. His lessons are deliberately structured to be exam-smart and time efficient. He believes that students perform best when they genuinely understand the subject, rather than merely memorise it, especially for a subject like Economics.

Jason’s teaching philosophy could be summarized as such:

1. Be open, receptive, and empathetic to what students have to say, so that students can communicate honestly with you.
2. Identify possible academic and/or non-academic issues that students can improve on in order to improve their grades. Let students be aware of these potential issues that they may have.
3. For academic issues, use a top-down approach. For example, for content gaps, run through big-picture content summaries and mind-maps and teach students to be familiar with them, before delving into the details of sub-topics. Jason’s structural approach to his lessons is heavily inspired by Noel Burch’s Four Stages of Competence. He tries his very best, in every lesson, to move students from a stage of unconscious incompetence in a particular Economics chapter or topic, to at least a stage of conscious incompetence, and eventually to a stage of conscious competence. 4. Provide assessments (via past-exam questions) to validate stage of conscious competence in a certain chapter or topic.
5. Understand that the stage of conscious competency is short-lived without revision. Hence there is a need to occasionally revisit and assess past competencies.
6. Lead by example. Don’t expect students to write well if you cannot. Don’t expect students to be organized if you are not. Don’t expect students to be open with you, if you are not with them.

Beyond results, what defines Jason's classroom is accessibility. Students describe him as direct, patient, and easy to talk to - they usually comment on how easy it is to approach Jason with questions, doubts, or even a half-written essay they're not sure about. And yet, Jason has no qualms being upfront to a student about what needs to be done to improve, and pushes them to perform at their ceiling while remaining attuned to the very real pressures of the academic year.
