Jason is IB Curriculum Designer of Economics at KS Academia Prep. He heads the department and teaches alongside Kirby Ng, reviewing Kirby's lessons so the same standard holds whether a student is with Jason or Kirby.
His feedback is examiner-focused: the pattern recognition of what scores well and what does not, built from 14+ years of tutoring and marking student work against IB and Cambridge IGCSE mark schemes. It is not a general sense of "good writing" but the specific habits examiners reward and penalise.
In his own classroom, that experience shows up in two ways. First, a resource bank built over the same 14+ years: summary notes, model essay outlines, past-year papers and marking schemes, and curated worksheets. Second, the structured, competence-based method set out in full in The KS Academia Prep Economics Methodology below.
Jason Low didn't set out to become one of Singapore's best IB, A-Level, and IGCSE Economics specialists. He simply never stopped teaching and improving his craft, because it's what he's good at and, frankly, what he enjoys.
14+ years later, he's still at it full-time, quietly building a reputation that tends to speak for itself. His students will tell you he's direct, funny, and genuinely invested in whether they get that grade. In the recent May 2025 IB Economics examinations, every single one of his students, Higher Level and Standard Level alike, walked away with either a 6 or a 7, with the majority (about 77%) achieving the maximum grade of 7. That kind of outcome is not accidental.
Jason holds an Honours degree from the National University of Singapore and brings that academic rigour into every lesson, alongside a comprehensive suite of resources compiled over years of teaching that students who join his small-group classes gain access to: summary notes, model essay outlines, past-year papers and marking schemes, curated worksheets, etc. His lessons are deliberately structured to be exam-smart and time efficient. He believes that students perform best when they genuinely understand the subject, rather than merely memorise it, especially for a subject like Economics.
Jason's teaching philosophy could be summarized as such:
Beyond results, what defines Jason's classroom is accessibility. Students describe him as direct, patient, and easy to talk to. They usually comment on how easy it is to approach Jason with questions, doubts, or even a half-written essay they're not sure about. And yet, Jason has no qualms being upfront to a student about what needs to be done to improve, and pushes them to perform at their ceiling while remaining attuned to the very real pressures of the academic year. For students who want to take economics seriously without dreading it, Jason's classes are a natural fit.
The same six-point philosophy described in About Jason above, applied across every paper: Paper 1 (extended response essays, 30% SL and 20% HL), Paper 2 (data response, 40% SL and 30% HL) and, for HL students, Paper 3 (quantitative techniques, 30%).
01
Students are encouraged to speak honestly about what isn't working, so problems surface early rather than at the mock exam.
02
Academic and non-academic issues are named explicitly, so students know exactly what's holding their grade back.
03
Big-picture summaries and mind-maps come before sub-topic detail, structured around Noel Burch's Four Stages of Competence.
04
Past-exam questions confirm a student has actually reached competence in a topic, not just sat through it.
05
Competence fades without revisiting it, so chapters are reassessed periodically rather than left behind once "covered".
06
The standards Jason asks of students, meaning clear writing, organisation and openness, are the standards he holds himself to.
IB Economics is marked against four assessment objectives. Past-exam assessment, point 4 of Jason's teaching philosophy above, is built around all four rather than only the first.
AO1
Getting the definitions and theory right in the first place. Necessary, but on its own worth the fewest marks.
AO2
Applying that theory to a real, specific context rather than reciting it in the abstract.
AO3
The highest-value skill and the most commonly under-taught one: weighing arguments and reaching a genuine judgement.
AO4
Correct diagrams, calculations and structured written technique, produced accurately under exam time pressure.
A student who can define a term but can't yet evaluate with it hasn't reached exam-ready competence. That is exactly what Jason's past-exam assessment cycle is designed to catch early, not at the mock exam.
Rather than memorising sample essays, students learn a repeatable sequence they can apply to any command term or context.
IB Economics and Cambridge IGCSE Economics each have their own exam format and marking criteria. Jason has taught to both for over a decade.

Four units, examined across Paper 1, Paper 2 and, at HL, Paper 3. Jason teaches to the full breadth of the syllabus, not just the popular topics.
01
What economics is, and how economists approach the world: scarcity, choice and competing schools of economic thought. (10 teaching hours, SL and HL.)
02
Demand, supply, elasticity, market failure and the limits of the price mechanism. The largest unit by teaching hours (35 SL, 70 HL).
03
Measuring economic activity, aggregate demand and supply, fiscal and monetary policy, and the economics of inequality and poverty (40 SL, 75 HL).
04
International trade, protectionism, economic integration, exchange rates, balance of payments and sustainable development (45 SL, 65 HL).
Paper 1 and Paper 2 draw on all four units. Paper 3 (HL only) does too, with a quantitative emphasis. The IA's three commentaries must come from three different units, excluding Unit 1.
A portfolio of three 800-word commentaries, one each on Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and The Global Economy, worth 30% at SL and 20% at HL. Jason's IA support works through all of it, and is set out in more depth in the IB Economics programme page.
01
Each commentary is based on a different unit (Unit 1 is excluded), using a different, contemporary source published within the year before writing.
02
Each commentary is marked on Diagrams, Terminology, Application and analysis, Key concept, and Evaluation (14 marks each). Rubric requirements is then applied once across the whole portfolio, giving 45 marks in total.
03
Choosing the right key concept and unit-appropriate theory before writing a word. This is the decision Jason spends the most time on, since it shapes every mark that follows.
Each semester, Jason runs dedicated IA drills: structured practice sessions that walk students through the IA process before they draft, not only feedback on a finished commentary.
Jason mentors the Economics Extended Essay from research question to final reflection, including dedicated EE consultations alongside regular lessons. An EE in Economics is explicitly not an extension of the IA. It is a more open-ended piece exploring an economic issue, policy or event from within the past five years.
01
Refining a focused, genuinely economics-specific research question. This is the single biggest factor in how the essay is eventually graded.
02
Selecting the right theoretical framework and structuring the analysis and evaluation around it.
03
Preparing the reflections recorded in the RPPF and the concluding viva voce conversation with the supervisor.
Jason also offers dedicated EE consultations: one-to-one sessions focused specifically on a student's Extended Essay, separate from their regular Economics lessons.
Jason's students sat the IB Economics examinations in May 2025. Across both Higher Level and Standard Level, the outcome was consistent rather than a one-off.

I joined Jason's IB econs class during Grade 11 and it's been really helpful! I was always very engaged during the lessons and the way Jason teaches is very efficient. I maintained a 7 throughout the IB course and ended up getting a 7 on my final exam as well. Thanks to Jason, I didn't have to prepare too much for finals - the weekly lessons itself are enough to pull you through! Totally recommend if you want to score high or if you are struggling with econs.
I took IB Econ lessons from Jason. He was very clear, patient, and knew exactly how to guide me through the IB. He also had a strong understanding of both IB requirements and Economics, so he was always able to answer my questions clearly and in detail. His explanations helped me understand difficult concepts much better, and he also provided classes for IA, which were rly important in order to achieve good grades. I recommend his classes for IB Econ students. Best in sg
Personally I attended the class for IB Economics and would highly recommend Jason's class.
Class is very well planned along with great short and concise notes.
I learned IGCSE Economics and IB Economics SL from my tutor Jason. His explanations were always clear and he provided students with appropriate examples that helped me to understand theories better. Thanks to his lessons, Economics was not a problem at all for me in my IB finals.
Taking classes from Jason tutor was an amazing experience. He focuses on both the 'intuitive understanding of economic concepts' and 'the practical methods to score high marks in the actual exam'. He is also very capable of planning lessons based on the individual needs of the student, which proves that he thoroughly observes each students for their weaknesses and capabilities. Thanks for Jason, I was not only able to get a 7 for economics on the IB Final exam, but was able to develop an economic mindset and logic and take it with me even after graduating highschool.
But afterall, he is passionate of what he teaches and the impact he gives to his students, which is what inspired me most of all.

The learning experience at KS Academia Prep has been genuinely excellent! Mr Jason's teaching methods are especially helpful. He doesn't just patiently explain economic knowledge and theory, he also helps students break down answering technique and study method. He never asks us to memorise by rote; instead he uses mind maps and chains of logic to help us understand each concept thoroughly and retain it.
The essay structure, answering technique, IA writing method and efficient memorisation approach he taught me not only got me a 7 in IB HL Economics, they have benefited me in my other subjects too. I'm very glad to have met a teacher as conscientious as Mr Jason, one who genuinely thinks about his students. Through his classes I achieved the grade I wanted, built good study habits, and developed a real interest in economics as a subject. What's more, Mr Jason has a very accurate sense of which topics matter most, and helps students prepare thoroughly before an exam. I sincerely recommend him to everyone studying IB Economics!
Although I spent less than a year learning from Jason, his tutoring has been the most enriching and beneficial for me. From the start, I wasn't a very competent humanities student, and getting the highest grade seemed completely out of reach.
His lessons helped to bolster my conceptual understanding of the principles of Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, and his way of teaching even brought me to enjoy the topic of International Economics, which originally was my least favourite topic.
Later on, I was able study more efficiently with Jason's notes compared to using the rather verbose textbooks recommended by school. Jason's notes and summary courses are terse and also very enriching, and they left room for additional real-world examples that I could even use in my essays.
Furthermore, Jason's way of using real-world examples and making different sample questions to cover all the topics trained me to strategize before the exam season. His timed practices also helped to optimize my in-exam pace, which a lot of students (including myself) were struggling with.
Ultimately, I noticed massive improvement from near-failing to a top grade, proving Jason's resources and tutoring skills to be exceptionally useful and effective in improving one's economics skills.
